The Caledonian Hotel - Hotel - Hotel information

The history of the hotel is fascinating; it was completed around 1882 with the arrival of the West Highland Railway in Oban. The hotel was originally known as The Station Hotel and was owned by the Campbell family who retained ownership until the 1950's. During the Second World War the hotel was requisitioned by the Royal Navy as their base in the town. Oban was a major base for transatlantic Convoys, a large RAF base was established at Connel in association with this and Oban was also the base for the famous flying boats. At the same time as the hotel was built the Royal Highland Yacht Club was established and the Hotel continues to be the base for this regatta. During the 1960's the building was renamed as The Caledonian Hotel and at this time was one of the first hotels in the Highlands to boast 'a motorised lift and central heating'. In 2002 it was closed for major rennovations and now offers stylish, contemporary comfort and service. The hotel has 59 rooms, many with fine views over Oban Bay to the mountains of Mull and Ardgour.

The Regent Hotel is prominently situated at the head of Oban's north pier and is close to the shopping centre. It is also ideal for those who wish to take a steamer cruise or ferry to one of the many islands. The Regent, externally, is a combination of a Victorian private hotel with an almost perfect example of 1930's Art Deco design. Internally both buildings merge to provide an open and airy ambience with an array of well positioned public foyers and lounges. As a town centre hotel the Regent cannot offer private parking although there is ample on-street parking on the adjacent pier. This 'disadvantage' does however mean that Oban's many shops, the distillery, the ferry terminals and stations are all within easy walking distance.
