Wassells - Bed and Breakfast - Hotel information

Wassells was originally built in the 1930s as a working farmhouse. The working farm was located on the land near the house. Today, the house has a splendid garden with a patio and hundreds of different plants, specially chosen to ensure that the garden has flowers all year round. Weather permitting; guests can enjoy meals outside on the patio, in the lovely surroundings of the garden. The garden also features a koi carp pond containing more than 30 fish of varying sizes and ages. There is also a separate nature pond, which is home to all sorts of pond life, including goldfish, frogs and dragonflies. The garden is also the home of the hens and the house’s dog. The garden backs onto the old railway line, where locally grown strawberries were once transported to Bristol Market on a dedicated train known as the Strawberry Special. The name Wassells was originally bestowed on the house by a previous owner and it originates from the Somerset term; to go a wasselling. This is an old tradition where cider farmers used to fire their guns through the boughs of the apple trees to frighten off the evil spirits in order produce a successful harvest.

All of the rooms are comfortable and well-equipped, with all the modern comforts and facilities you need to enjoy a restful, relaxing holiday. All of the rooms have controllable heating and are double glazed for warmth and soundproofing. Each room has a flat-screen digital TV, giving you access to over 70 TV and radio channels (for those rained-off days). Each room also has a DAB digital radio alarm/clock and a hospitality tray and chilled filtered water. All of the double and twin rooms have a large power shower. The single room has its own adjacent private bathroom with a shower over the bath. The bedrooms to the back of the house overlook the lovely Cheddar reservoir and the local sports field, where, in the summer, the traditional sounds of the village cricket team can be heard. The front bedrooms look out onto the village of Cheddar and the gorge.

In the foothills of the magnificent Mendips, Cheddar is a quiet village, famous for its splendid surroundings, including the caves, Cheddar Gorge and other attractions. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the village itself, within walking distance, and if it is refreshing tranquillity you are looking for, then the village of Cheddar is ideal. There is also plenty to see and do in the surrounding area and the region is great for walking, cycling, fishing, shooting, sailing and golf (both crazy and otherwise!) The nearby cities and towns of the South West are within an hour’s drive, including Glastonbury, Street, Weston-Super-Mare and Taunton. Further afield, you might also like to explore Wells, Bristol, Yeovil and Bath. For the more adventurous, the North Devon coastline is about 2 hours’ drive away and Poole and Bournemouth on the Dorset coast are also a similar distance from the bed and breakfast. Local attractions include Longleat House and Safari Park (one hour), Monkey World (1.5 hours), Clarks Village (30 minutes), Butlins Minehead (1.5 hours), the Fleet Air Arm Museum (about 1 hour), Wookey Hole and Caves (15 minutes), the Helicopter Museum (20 minutes) and the Bath and West Showground (45 minutes).

By Car: - Leave the M5 motorway at junction 22 (following the signs for Cheddar Caves & Gorge). - Take the A38 North towards Bristol for approximately 9.5 km (6 miles). - When you reach the village of Cross, turn right onto the A371, heading towards Axbridge. - Continue along the A371 and watch out for the BP petrol station on the left-hand side. Wassells is approximately 800 metres after the petrol station, on the right-hand side. Parking: Parking is available for guests’ use, free of charge. By Train/Coach: The nearest stations are Bristol or Weston-Super-Mare. From there, you can take a taxi to Cheddar. Although buses are available, they are limited and should be checked in advance.

By Car: From the M5: - Leave the M5 at junction 22 (Burnham-on-Sea). - Follow the A38 north for 11.3 km/ 7 miles. - Turn right to Ceddar. - We are on the A371 right in the centre of Cheddar village opposite the Market Cross. From the airport: We are 24.1 km/ 15 miles (20 minutes) from Bristol Airport. - Turn right out of the airport on to the A38 until you reach the A371. There are taxis at the airport and we can arrange taxis back. By Train: The train station is in Weston-Super-Mare. The bus 126 brings you to our front door. Ask the driver for the Market Cross.
