The Residence - Bed and Breakfast - Hotel information

The Residence began life in 1796 as Ormond Lodge, part of a local estate. During its existence, it has reputedly been one of the homes of exiled Emperor Haile Selassie during the 1930s. Several public rooms await you, including a very traditional library, where deep red walls and dark mahogany furniture complement oak floors. Lots of books, an internet access point, sofas, desk, study table and chairs and sumptuous soft furnishings are all on hand. The Conservatory operates as a bar and occasional brunch room. When the weather is right sun streams into this stunning area, which seats 24 as a bar or 14 as a meeting room. Full audio-visual equipment, including a giant pull down screen and sound system, as well as a heated paved outside deck for the warmer times. The garden is also available with its beautiful Italianate terrace with boule piste, croquet lawn, 2 fountains and a stunning summer house, which offers a cosy escape from the world.

There is no air conditioning anywhere because the Bath' stone maintains an equable temperature year round. By Car: From the A4 (West of Bath): - Enter Bath via the A4 (Bristol Road) and proceed until it becomes the A36 (Lower Bristol Road). - Turn left to cross the bridge at the 1st opportunity (A3064, Windsor Bridge Road). - Turn right onto Upper Bristol Road. - Take the 3rd left onto Park Lane Road and proceed to the end. - There is a mini roundabout by the junction of Weston Road and Park Lane Road. The Residence is located through the gates on the roundabout. From the M4: - Exit the M4 via junction 18, for the A46 towards Bath and Stroud. - Stay on the A46 until you reach London Road Roundabout. Take the 3rd exit onto London Road West. - This road becomes London Road. Take the 2nd exit at the traffic circle to stay on London Road. - Bear left onto Roman Road. - Take the next right onto Lansdown Road. - Take the 3rd left onto Montpelier, and continue through Julian Road, Crescent Lane and Weston Road. - There is a mini roundabout by the junction of Weston Road and Park Lane Road. The Residence is located through the gates on the roundabout.

Built at the turn of the century, the County was originally 2 separate houses. After being turned into a guest house in the 1940s, it became a home-away-from home for his imperial highness, Haile Selassie, during his exile from Abysinnia. The County overlooks the county cricket ground which also doubles as Bath’s rugby ground in season. These both lie on the recreation ground which was a gift to the people of Bath from a wealthy landowner. It remains a greenbelt in the heart of the city. The County is a listed building, therefore is does not have a lift (elevator). There is also no porter. Bedrooms are situated on the first and second floor. Parking is available on site at no extra charge. On the day of departure all cars must be removed by 11:00. The County does have a general night porter on duty.

By Public Transport: There are regular train services direct from London Paddington and Waterloo to Bath, with an average journey time of around 90 minutes. Bristol Temple Meads is just 15 minutes away by train. By Coach: Frequent National Express services run from London Victoria Coach Station, London Heathrow and London Gatwick to Bath. From the airport: Bristol International Airport is just 15 miles from Bath. A Flyer Express coach service picks up passengers outside the airport every 30 minutes, from 06.00 - 23.45, 7 days a week. The bus then drops passengers at Bristol Temple Meads Station, where you can catch one of the many frequent train services into Bath (journey time approximately 15 minutes). A coach service also runs from Gatwick via Heathrow to the train station at Reading, where you can pick up a direct train to Bath.

The hotel is situated on the south-eastern side of Bath centre, above and behind Sydney Gardens. By Car: From Bristol: - After the dual carriageway, take the Lower Bristol Road (A36) into the city, through 2 sets of traffic lights. - Follow the one-way system and the signs for the A36. - Weave under the railway, around the back of the station and pass the Menzies Hotel on your left. - At the next set of traffic lights, proceed ahead under the railway bridge, go straight over the next roundabout and then turn right into Sydney Place (by the Holburne Museum). - The entrance to The Bath Spa Hotel is 180 metres (200 yards) up the hill on the right hand side. From London: - Exit the M4 at junction 18 and take the A46 to Bath, approximately 13 km (8 miles) until the major roundabout. - At the roundabout turn right, joining the A4 and follow the signs for 'City Centre'. - After 1.6 km (one mile), at the junction of the A36 and the traffic lights, turn left following the signs for the A36. - Follow the road over Cleveland Bridge and past the Fire Station. - At the traffic lights turn right and then take the next left, after the Holburne Museum, into Sydney Place. - The entrance to the Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel is 180 metres (200 yards) up the hill on the right hand side. By Air: Bristol International Airport has excellent regional and European flights and also regular flights to New York. There is a helicopter landing pad near the hotel at Lansdown for which advance permission is required. Bristol International Airport - 35 km (22 miles). Heathrow International - 160 km (100 miles). Birmingham International - 145 km (90 miles). Gatwick - 233 km (145 miles). By Rail: Bath Spa station is about 1.6 km (one mile) from the hotel. The service for London (75 minutes), Reading, Swindon, Bristol and South Wales is excellent, with trains at least hourly. There is a good service to Birmingham and the North via Bristol.

* Exit at junction 18 and take the A46 towards Bath. Shortly after it turns into a dual carriageway, exit onto a large roundabout, following signs for Bath town centre along the A4. * Continue along the A4 for about one mile, then follow signs for through traffic, turning left at a set of traffic lights onto Bathwick Street (see map above). * Pass over the river and the fire station on your left. * Drive straight on until you meet a roundabout. Turn right. * At the next roundabout drive straight-on. * At the traffic lights, carry straight-on and pass under the railway bridge. * Follow this road (A36 Pulteney Road) around the edge of Bath, until you meet an elongated roundabout where the train line runs across to your right. Turn left up the hill signposted towards Shepton Mallet on the A367. * Drive for one minute up the hill. Upper Oldfield Park is the first on the right. (Oldfield Road means you have gone one road too far!). * Dorian House is the third building on the left.

Important: do not turn left at these lights even though the signpost directs all through traffic to do so. - After about 200 yards take the second exit at the mini roundabout along Paragon Buildings. - Continue through the next set of traffic lights and keep to the left hand lane. - Continue straight through the lights passing the Royal York Hotel on your left. - Proceed to the end of the road (George Street) until you are forced to go left. - Continue straight at traffic lights onto Queen Square. Go round 3 sides of the square and exit onto Charlotte Street (signs for Long Term Car Park). - Continue to the end of Charlotte Street (about 300 hundred yards) and join the Upper Bristol Road. - Number 30 is 200 yards along this road on the right hand side. We have a Red Pillar (Post) Box outside the gate.

From the M4: - Exit at junction 18. - Join the A46 to Bath. - Continue through the village of Pennsylvania. - At the next roundabout, turn right onto the A420 towards Bristol. - After 1/3 mile follow signs to filter left to Lansdown Park and Ride. - Along this country lane the road dips down then rises to a T-junction, bear left. - Continue up hill along a flat plain, past the racecourse and golf course. - Then the road bends left. - There is a large pub called the Blathwayt Arms on the right. - About 300 metres past the pub, turn right turn at new junction to Weston. - At the bottom of hill there is a mini roundabout, take the left exit. - Go through village and past the pedestrian crossing and the Crown and Anchor pub, then turn right into Anchor Road, which becomes Penn Hill Road (signposted Bristol). - At the end of this road (approximately half a mile), turn left at the T-junction. - Cranleigh is 500 yards on the right. From Warminster: - Take the A36 towards Bath. - Keeping left, follow signs for A36 Bristol and City Centre. - At the next junction, turn left onto the A36 (A4) to Bristol. - Carry on over the roundabout and under the bridge, still following signs for A36 (A4) Bristol. - Turn left under the Railway Arches, past Toyota & Renault garages. - Signs change to A4 Bristol. - Pass the Mitsubishi garage. - Keep to the centre lane and after the BMW garage, at the next set of lights, turn right to Bristol A4 (A431). - Continue over the bridge, past gas storage tanks (on the right). - At the lights turn left to Bristol A4 (A431). - At the next lights, with The Weston pub on your left, turn right. Fork to Bitton A431. - At the mini roundabout bear left onto the A431 Bitton and Kelston. - Cranleigh is about 1/4 mile on the left. From Wells: - Take the A39. - As you near Bath look for and follow signs to Park & Ride (Newbridge). - Take the first left after the Park & Ride entrance (Old Newbridge Hill). - This steep hill has a sharp bend to the right. - At the T-junction at the top of hill, turn right. - Cranleigh is 50 yards on right. Just a mile down the road is Charlotte Street Car Park - a large long stay city centre car park with CCTV.

North: Leave the m4 at Junction 18, taking the a46 towards Bath. After ten miles exit the dual carriageway following signs to Bath City Centre. At the immediate roundabout take the third exit (right) still towards the city centre. Continue straight on for two miles, through four sets of traffic lights. After you pass Morrisions supermarket on the left, (at the fifth set of lights), get into the left lane and turn left. Cross over the river, passing the fire station and at the lights. Turn right along Sydney Place, passing the Holbourne Museum of Art on your left. At the next large roundabout take the first exit (left). Follow this road up Bathwick Hill and out of Bath for one mile, passing the University. Continue for another mile and half, crossing a small roundabout, Combe Grove Manor is the left, two hundred yards after Ralph Allen School. South: Take the A36 from Warminster heading towards Bath. When you reach the Limpley Stoke Viaduct and traffic light, turn left immediately after the Viaduct Pub. Continue up Brassknocker Hill for 1 mile. Do not turn off in to Monkton Combe; Barceló Combe Grove Manor is on the left half way up the hill opposite a row of cottages.
